Thank you for your interest in a good cause!
The R1 is a great sharpener, we are sure you'll like it very much. We don't have specific series numbers, other than the individual Hapstone serial number.
The product enhancements of the R1 include a fine tuning adapter, spring stoppers and a beefed up, upgraded stone holder compared to newer generation Hapstone sharpeners. We also include a Digital angle gauge. The R1 Reborn kit is basically like one of our specialized professional "Black" kits.
Regarding your question about stone thickness compensation, the fine tuner can used for dual purpose, both as a fine tuning angle adjuster and as a stone thickness compensator. I suggest always using your digital angle gauge to readjust your sharpening angle when you swap stones. The R1 clamps are specifically designed for this model, so other series clamps will not work with the R1. If there is sufficient demand, we will look into the option of designing more of our "Gearconnect" adapters for the R1 to enable use of any other systems' clamps.
That being said, the clamps supplied with the R1 are incredibly versatile and is able to clamp a huge variety of knives. As far as other upgrades are concerned, the R1 base is compatible with any of the new generation modules like the Magnetic M series, R2 rotating module, scissors module, chisel module and so on. Our comment on the product page about not needing a R2 module on the R1, is more of a recommendation. For most people, this would not be necessary but it's fully compatible with these modules.
Hope this helps with your decision!
