Q - How should I estimate and select the correct undercut angle for the KakBritva wide central slit clamp for use with a FFG hunting knife? Blade spine thickness is 0.165" (4.2mm). Blade width is about 1-3/16" (30mm). For use with a TSProf Kadet. Thanks
A - It is very likely that you would be able to clamp your knife with the standard clamps you received with your TSPROF Kadet unit by using this method - Try clamping one of your two clamps on a flat section (normally the ricasso / front of the tang), and the other clamp an inch or two back from the tip of the knife. With this method, the clamp on the flat section will stop any knife rotation (up & down) and the clamp towards the tip will stop any flexing. With this method, you should be able to clamp a huge variety of knives.
If you would like to try one of the KakBritva undercut clamps for your knife, then you can run some numbers by using a triangle calculator online. Running some numbers it appears that your knife grind is approximately 8 degrees (inclusive). All of the undercut clamps have a clamp opening size of 5 - 6mm, which is approximately 1 - 2mm wider than the spine of your blade. When clamped, there will be some angular change in the clamp to align with closing to clamp your knife, so it would appear that a low number undercut clamp may work in this case. Depending on the grind and distal taper of your knife, around about a 5 degree undercut is likely a good choice.
You would also need to purchase a GearConnect adapter for the KakBritva wide central clamp to use on your Kadet.
First try the method I explained above, you may find that you don't need the undercut clamps. As long as there is some flat part (even small) on your knife for one of your clamps.
