Q - Do these stones require the use of a Nagura dressing stone? Also, would these make a good compliment to the five Diamond stones that come with Kadet?
A - The Venev stones do not need a slurry from a Nagura to assist in cutting while sharpening. Some Nagura stones, like our Bodrid stone or a King Nagura stone as an example, do work very well when used as a cleaning and refreshing stone.
Rub the Nagura on your Venev under a little bit of running water and will clean the Venev stones right up in no time at all while the Nagura releases its grit onto the Venev. A Nagura also helps remove a tiny bit of bond to expose the diamonds in the Venev stones more, which reconditions them while cleaning.
You can also use a product like Bar Keepers friend for deep cleaning, if that is all you have. For more regular cleaning, a nylon brush (or a firm bristle toothbrush) and some soapy water does the trick.
Regarding the second part of your question, the Venev stones will be a huge step up in edge quality from the TSProf diamond plated stones that come with some Kadet sets. As an example, the Venev 1200 grit stone (FEPA-F grit rating) actually equates to finer than a 4000 grit (JIS grit rating) stone.
Generally, diamond plated stones (like the ones you are referring to) are a lot harsher on a delicate edge but they do cut very fast. This is beneficial if you're setting a new bevel on a knife and you want to remove steel fast. The Venev stones also cut pretty fast, but because the diamonds are embedded inside a hard bond, they only partially protrude from the bond and are a lot less aggressive on a delicate edge.
If you're very meticulous and you do everything just right, you can actually whittle a human hair with some knives straight off of the Venev 1200 stone, without even stropping!
