Are the improved holders required to use double sided Venev stones (centaur, etc), or is it possible to make the standard ones work as well?

They are not absolutely required, but they do hold the stones a little more securely. The standard clamps work fine with stones like the double sided Venev stones, as long as you keep an eye on them while sharpening - in case the stones shift a little bit.
