There is definitely no need to buy the entire series of stones. The grit combinations offer options that suit individual needs and preferences. If you don't have a set of these and want to purchase just 3 stones, then something in the line of 80+150 & 240+400 & 800+1200 would work very well. Another option would be 100+240 & 400+800 & 1200+1500.
If you just want 2 stones for every day use, then something along the lines of 100+240 and 400+800 would work well.
FYI, the grit rating used is "FEPA-F" on these stones, so an 800 grit stone is already a very fine and superb stone.
