The metallic layer is soft and slowly wears away with use, so partial refreshing does occur naturally with use. It should not be necessary unless the stones have been used extensively or clogged with very soft steel for some reason. If you do eventually want to etch the stones then you could use some ferric chloride to clean and expose deeper layers of CBN by etching away the top metallic layer. Just try and avoid getting ferric chloride on the aluminum backing plates and make sure to neutralize the acid completely with baking soda or another alkaline solution as soon as possible after etching. Also be aware that etching could leave an uneven surface on the stones, so do it carefully and methodically.
