It would depend on what types of knives and what types of steel you want to sharpen. If you only have basic stainless or high carbon knives, then silicon carbide or aluminum oxide stones would work just fine. If you want to sharpen higher end knives with high vanadium carbide steels, then diamond or CBN based stones would work better. For great all-round stones, I typically recommend the dual sided Venev diamond bonded stones. Each Venev dual sided stone is effectively 2 stones, they are a combination of 2 grits (1 on each side)
If you only sharpen EDC type short blade knives of around 5 inches or less, then 4 inch long stones and a 4 inch Leading Edge stone holder is fine.
If you want to sharpen longer blades, then 6 inch stones and a 6 inch Leading Edge stone holder is better.
I also highly recommend a V block clamp support, the original clamp has too much play for exact accurate sharpening angles. The support block makes for rock solid sharpening with no play.
In addition to stones and a stone holder, I would highly recommend getting the Leading Edge universal upgrade kit (magnetic base, long blade and scissors attachment included.) This would open up a whole new world of possibilities for your Work Sharp precision adjust and allow you to sharpen just about any knife, and even scissors.
