Q - It's a great concept and maybe I'm doing something wrong, but my knives keep sliding while I'm sharpening. Thought I was using too much pressure but even with light pressure the knives loose contact with the outer point.
A - The magnetic surface is not designed to hold on to the knife as secure as a clamp, it is designed to be a very versatile flat magnetized surface that can be adapted to work with a large variety of blades and expand & compliment the capabilities of a clamp-based system. This allows sharpening of knives that typically cannot be clamped well in a clamp. It's designed on the concept of sharpening similar to an "Edge Pro" system with the blade being stabilized by your other hand. This allows you to easily reposition the blade and have more control over, for example, swiveling the tip or heel forward a little bit while sharpening, just to touch up some areas more than others etc. As a matter of interest, the magnets are also designed to be able to be removable in case you do not want any magnetic surface under your blade.
The best method I've found if you want to limit movement is to lightly hold the blade stable with one hand while sharpening or to place a finger on the blade / handle to assist in limiting sliding when it's needed.
If you prefer a more "grippy" surface below the knife, then I suggest sticking a thin layer of rubberized tape (like "helicopter tape" / ICS racers tape or something similar) over the top of the magnetic surface. Another option is "Gorilla Crystal clear tape", it works too but is not as "grippy" as the above mentioned surface guard tapes.
Another great option for a more permanent "grippy" top surface, would be to spray the entire top surface with something like Gorilla Waterproof Patch & seal spray (the clear version). If you do this, just make sure to cover the sides, back and front with masking / painters tape before spraying the top surface.
Hope this helps!
