They clamp a wide variety of stones more securely, especially rectangular stones without a backing plate. They are reversible (one side is for dovetail backed stones and the other for non-backed stones) The stone holders also have a screw with a hinge / swivel action in the center, allowing them to self center better on stones without back plates.
