They are normally ready to be used new and require no preparation but if you really prefer, you could lap their surface with a pinch of silicon carbide powder and water on a flat surface. Use weak soapy water (dish soap in water works) as a lubricant when sharpening. Clean them after use with mild dish soap, water and a nylon brush. Rinse properly and let dry before storing them. After some extended use time, you can refresh their surface with a small Nagura stone.
