Welcome to the world of sharpening! Initially, I would recommend not being too concerned about stropping just yet - at least until you've got your sharpening up to a very high standard. Stropping the wrong way can easily round and blunt your edges if you over-strop or do it wrong.
When you eventually want to dip your toes into stropping, an all-round refresher and decent polisher would be a 1 micron diamond compound. This is a great place to start. Use firm leather or hard material such as wood for a backing. Don't do many stropping passes at all and keep the pressure very light.
