Yes, this is the same with any magnetic platform based sharpening system. The Leading Edge core upgrade modifies your KME into a magnetic platform based sharpener. It also has a scissors sharpening clamp at the front of the platform if needed. This front clamp also has a secondary purpose which allows it to be used to stabilize saber type grinds, if needed. The large blade magnetic base accessory had a secondary function which allows sharpening of long, flexible blades if needed.
The benefits of a magnetic platform, is the fact that you can sharpen as low as you want to without the obstruction of a clamp on your blade. It also allows difficult knife grinds that struggle in a clamp to be sharpened on a magnetic platform.
The 3-point knife guide is used as a reference to make sure that when you flip your blade to the opposite side, you can easily place it in the same mirror image position. When you position your knife at the start of your sharpening session and you are happy with the sharpening position, simply release the top 3-point guide and slide it forward until 2 points of the guide touches the spine of your knife, then tighten the thumb screw to hold the guide in position for your the rest of your sharpening session. Simply look at this position and when you flip your knife over just place it down as a mirror image on the other side of the blade when you sharpen the opposite side.
