Use some silicon carbide powder on a flat surface with a little bit of water. Draw a hatched pattern on the stone surface with pencil and flatten it evenly until the hatched pattern disappears.

Yes, it's much cheaper to use silicon carbide powder than a diamond plate. A little goes a very long way, you'll only need a pinch or so at a time.
Use powder that's coarser than the stone you'd like to flatten.
