It's not meant to hold a knife as securely as a clamp. Any table-type sharpener has a specific purpose, which is to have no obstruction on the top of the blade and also to give flexibility in what types of knife grinds you can sharpen. Not all grinds work well in a clamp, and some other knives need a lower sharpening angle that what you can get when it's held by a clamp. Whenever you use a table-type based sharpening system (whether that be with or without magnets), you are meant to hold your blade lightly in position while you sharpen. Never rely on the magnets alone to hold your knife in place, these types of sharpening platforms are not meant to be used like that.
Some people prefer no magnets at all, to allow movement of the blade as they sharpen. Others prefer magnets to assist in holding it in place for you. The Leading Edge system has a removable magnet tray which allows you to use it with or without magnets.
Magnets alone will never hold a knife as secure as a clamp, but sometimes you can't use a clamp on a knife. This type of system gives you more flexibility in what types of knives you can sharpen.
