Sharpening even some of the highest HRC steels are fine with these Naniwa Chosera aluminum oxide based stones, as long as the knife is a relatively basic high carbon steel. Some modern steels have a very high Vanadium or similar carbide content, and this type of carbide content is more of a concern than purely the HRC level of the steel. If you're sharpening high modern carbide steel types, then diamond or CBN based stones are better.
