For general cleaning, a nylon brush and dish soap will do. For more deep surface cleaning & conditioning, rubbing a nagura (conditioning) stone over the surface under running water works very well. The "king nagura" stone works well.
For considerable lapping or flattening, silicon carbide powder on a flat surface - but this won't be necessary for a very long time.
