If you prefer an oil-based lubricant rather than soapy water, it is recommended to use plain mineral oil or better yet - oleic oil rather than WD-40.
The benefit of soapy (very diluted dish soap) water, is the fact that the stones are cleaner when you're storing them. Oil works well, but the stones are messier during storage and you likely won't be able to go back to soapy water after oil has been used on your stones.
