Silicon carbide for lapping

Is there a particular grit of silicon carbide powder you recommend for lapping or reconditioning? Or would etching be better. I have the 400 and 1000.

Silicon carbide works just fine to lap these metallic cbn (or diamond) stones. Here is an approximate guide of silicon carbide powder for you:
F80 - Flattening of very coarse stones (60 - 150 grit)
F120 - Flattening of any stones (180 grit and above)
F280 - Lapping of medium waterstones (400 - 1000 grit)
If it needs some work, I would get F80 powder. When the work is done, you can progress to the other grit/grits.
